December 25 ~ Happy Birthday, Humphrey Bogart ! Born on this day in 1899, Humphrey Bogart, a cultural icon considered by many to have been the greatest silver screen star of all time. Bogart will lead off the 2011 season of the Nostalgia Night film series. The African Queen starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn will open the series on Sunday, January 9. If you are a Bogart fan, thanks to the Friends of the Devereaux Library, you can check out a Bogie flick at the library. December 24 ~ On this day in 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman , James Lovell and William Anders orbited the moon. During this time the crew made a Christmas Eve television broadcast , reading the first 10 verses from the book of Genesis. At the time, the broadcast was the most watched television program ever.

December 23 ~ On this day in 1902, the Aswan Dam on the Nile River in Egypt was completed. The work of English engineers, the dam was constructed to stockpile water so that a regular supply would be available during the country’s low water times. December 22 ~ On this day in 1937 the Lincoln Tunnel, connecting Manhattan and New Jersey, opened. Initially designed for two tubes, one opened in 1937; the second tube was delayed by World War II. In 1957 a third tube was added. The tunnel is one of the busiest vehicular tunnels in the world, carrying about 120,000 vehicles each day. Learn more about the Lincoln Tunnel @ your library.
