December 25 ~ The Erie Canal opened for business on this day in 1825. An engineering marvel of its day, the canal included 18 aqueducts, 83 locks and a rise of 568 feet. Construction of the 363 mile long canal had begun in July 1817 to provide a means of moving goods between Lake Erie and the Hudson River.
