As meteorologists, we rely on long term patterns in the ocean/atmosphere (such as El Nino/La Nina and the Madden-Julian Oscillation) to give some indication of what to expect over seasonal periods; even with this information, our ability to give specific forecast for any given day months in advance is nearly impossible. The Climate Prediction Center issues seasonal outlooks (official 90 day outlooks are issued once a month) which indicate what to expect compared to the regular climatology of the area. See the Climate Prediction Center website for more information: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/forecasts/
