Alvan Clark patented the telescope on this day in 1851. Today Clark’s 102 cm refracting telescope at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, remains the world’s largest such instrument.

Discovery of 390 million year old insect fossils, the oldest known specimens, is reported in Science on this day in 1988. Science and hundreds of other journals are available @ your library.
