Construction of the Holland Tunnel begins in 1920. When completed, the tunnel will provide a direct path from Twelfth Street in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Canal Street in New York. The tunnel will run 94 feet below the Hudson River and include two tubes over 8,000 feet long. The tunnel will open to traffic in November 1927 and will be named for civil engineer Clifford Milburn Holland who will die directing the tunnel’s construction.
