South Dakota citizens will have access November 1, 2006 to two South Dakota newspapers, online reference books, and practice tests through three new databases provided by the South Dakota State Library for statewide access.

“These new resources are a part of the new mission of the State Library and represent an important piece of the State Library’s support of library services on the local level,” said Dorothy Liegl, State Librarian. The new databases are:

Citizens can browse current and archived news articles, editorials, reviews, birth and marriage announcements, obituaries and a variety of special sections. It will be useful for general reference or to research local and national issues, events, people, government, education, arts, business, sorts, real estate and much more.

Learning Express Library—an online learning platform of over 300 practice tests for grade school through adulthood. Tests include ACT, SAT, GRE, licensing practice exams, 4th grade math diagnostic tests, and more. A wide assortment of tests that will benefit many citizens of the state. Dr. Rick Melmer, DOE Secretary said, “Learning Express Library features a wide assortment of tests that will benefit the citizens of our state. The program is easy to use and relevant to your learning needs. It would be an excellent resource for many South Dakota citizens.”

Gale Virtual Reference Library—a core collection of virtual reference books available in the library and at home 24/7. Subject areas are: business, education, history/terrorism, medicine, law and government, and science.

Citizens can utilize these new online resources by going to their local library or from their home computer using a library card from a South Dakota Library Network member library. For more information about these new databases and other electronic resources, contact your local library.
