October 8 ~ The Great Fire of Chicago broke out on this day in 1871. The fire raged for more than 24 hours leaving in its wake more than 17,000 destroyed buildings, 250 fatalities, and 98,500 homeless. World War I hero, U.S. Corporal Alvin C. York , almost single-handedly kills 25 German soldiers and captures 132 in the Argonne Forest in France in 1918. York had originally tried to avoid being drafted as a conscientious objector. After this event he was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor .

NCAR is moving forward with the process of opening their repository from UCAR /NCAR Authors and Co-Authors. http://opensky.library.ucar.edu/ They are working through the different publishers to grant general access to NCAR-authored work. Some embargoes (delays between publication and access) may apply. They have success with AGU, AMS and Springer journal publishers, and they are working on Elsevier next. These holdings start in 2009 (since that's when they started the project). You do not have to be a UCAR Member or Affiliate to enjoy access.

You may have noticed the photographs on the lower left-hand side of the Library’s homepage. These photos are a sampling of the holdings in the campus archives and special collections at the Devereaux Library. Most recently scenes from M-Weeks past and present were displayed. Currently, we are featuring images from the works of William J. Collins. For nearly 50 years, Mr. Collins operated a photography business in Rapid City recording views of his region and its people. The library has a small collection of his works. Collins photos are featured in the book, Black Hills, White Sky .
