Notes from the Archives

In 1974 the School of Mines, in cooperation with the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce, spearheaded a carpool project.  Interested parties submitted their contact information as well as home and work locations and expected schedules and received a list of prospective carpool partners.  Maybe it’s time to revisit this idea?  We might save some gasoline, wear and tear on vehicles and roads, and maybe even free up a parking place or two.

Be a law abiding citizen and preserve your legacy!

Did you know that by law you must submit copies of documents, photos, videos, etc. that are created using campus funds and/or resources?  The South Dakota State Legislature passed this law several years ago.  Recently, the South Dakota State Library delegated the responsibility of collecting the materials produced at regental institutions to their respective library.  The Devereaux Library has tried to make this as painless as possible. You can submit your materials via the library’s website . Located on the menu bar is a Submit Archival Documents link for easy submission of electronic material. The Devereaux Library will then archive and make them publicly accessible as required by law. Not only will you be abiding by the law, you will be saving a piece of history for future generations. What should be submitted? There are no concrete guidelines. The law states that a state publication is “any information originating in or produced by the authority of a state agency or at

2nd floor reopens

On the evening of August 27th the Devereaux Library experienced a major water leak. Prompt action on the part of facilities, campus administration and library staff prevented the loss of any library materials or equipment. There was a great deal of water that needed to be dealt with.  The floor was closed to the public due to the unsafe nature of the partially disassembled shelving ranges and the general mess of stacked shelves and materials. Finally on Monday the 8th the carpet was dry.  So the ranges were reassembled and materials were re-shelved. 2nd floor is once again "open for business."

A closer look at the library's NEW website

Welcome back to old friends and hello to all the new faces on campus!   Over the summer the library website got a new look and some cool new features.   All of the links that you’ve used in the past are still available, just rearranged. New features include subject guides to electronic resources, a finding resources guide, a federated search option, tools and apps for electronic resources, a FAQ section, links to new print books, e-books, best sellers, and videos, new ways to locate journal titles, and a link to submit archival documents and photos. If you want to change your password, check due dates or renew material, click on My Library Card located at the bottom of every page. One of the big improvements is the inclusion of a federated search option. Users may now search multiple databases at one time. One of the databases is WorldCat, others include a number of journal databases and other services. Results will then link you to either the full-text version of electro

Devereaux Library has a new website

http://www.sdsmt.edu/Library/ The library has an all new website.  Many thanks are due to Marsha Ahrenkiel, Vickie Bender  and Janet Taylor for many hours of work.  That said, I’m sure there are things that aren’t quite done yet.  If you stumble upon anything that doesn’t work like you think it should, or if you can’t find something, please let me know.  If you’d like a personal demo or a session for your students we’d be happy to arrange one.
